The CW’s contentious live-action Powerpuff Girls relaunch, Powerpuff, is apparently still in the works.
Powerpuff, The CW’s intended live-action reimagining of Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls, is allegedly still in development, despite the fact that updates on the project have been lacking for months.
Matt Webb Mitovich of TVLine was asked in the newest issue of his Inside Line segment if The CW was still working on Powerpuff or if the show had been discreetly cancelled. “I am certain that The CW’s live-action adaption of the Powerpuff Girls, which was deemed “too campy” when it premiered last spring (and which no longer stars Chloe Bennet), is still in some level of redevelopment,” Mitovich responded.
Naomi’s Season 2 chances have reportedly improved thanks to Batwoman, and Legends has been cancelled.
The CW was first reported to be creating a live-action Powerpuff Girls revival (later dubbed Powerpuff) in August 2020, with the show obtaining a pilot order in February 2021. In March 2021, it was confirmed that Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup will be played by Chloe Bennett (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ), Dove Cameron (Descendants), and Yana Perrault, respectively. Later that month, it was confirmed that Donald Faison (Scrubs, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) had been cast as Professor Utonium, the girls’ father.
In April 2021, Nicholas Podany joined Powerpuff‘s cast as Joseph ‘Jojo’ Mondel Jr., the son of Mojo Jojo, the Powerpuff Girls’ arch-nemesis from the original cartoon. Shortly thereafter, Robyn Lively was cast to play the role of Ms. Sara Bellum, while Tom Kenny was tapped to reprise his role as the cartoon’s narrator.

However, it was revealed in May 2021 that the Powerpuff pilot had not been approved to series, despite the fact that the network planned to retool the idea with the same creative team and cast. The CW’s CEO, Mark Pedowitz, explained why the pilot was cancelled: “We have great faith in the cast. We believe in the writers, Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier]. We trust in Greg Berlanti and Warner Brothers Television Studios.”
Pedowitz went on, “The pilot did not function in this case. We wanted to give it another attempt because there are enough elements in there. That’s why we didn’t want to keep doing what we were doing. It might have been a little too campy in tone. It didn’t seem as grounded in reality as it could have. However, testing things out teaches you something. So, in this case, we felt it was necessary to take a step back and return to the drawing board.”

However, the original pilot’s screenplay supposedly leaked online around the same time. Fans of the original Powerpuff Girls cartoon were outraged by the script, which they felt went in the wrong way for the live-action adaptation. Professor Utonium, for example, was reimagined as abusive, manipulative, and fame-hungry, despite usually being portrayed as a kind, caring parent. The show also appears to take place after Blossom’s murder of Mojo.
In August 2021, the CW’s Powerpuff received yet another setback when it was revealed that Bennet had left the project. Since then, there have been little developments about the show, including who would replace Bennet as Blossom. Nonetheless, Powerpuff is still being worked on to some level, according to Mitovich.
